The Republic of Croatia has 1,244 islands, islets, rocks, and reefs. Of these, 53 are permanently inhabited, sustained by their communities and a diverse range of social and economic activities. In addition to their picturesque beauty, the islands preserve a rich heritage of traditional crafts, intangible cultural heritage, and gastronomy, with distinctive flavours and aromas shaped by the unique combination of the Mediterranean climate, fertile land, and karst landscape.
