Škraping 2026
Škraping is much more than a race - it is a unique sports and tourism event that for two decades has combined adventure, nature, and the island way of life. This international trekking race over rugged and sharp Pašman rocks („škrape“) has become a recognizable symbol of active tourism on Croatian islands since its inception in 2006, as well as a must-visit gathering place for nature lovers and extreme sports enthusiasts.
What adds special value to Škraping is that for many years it has carried the prestigious „Croatian Island Product“ label, confirming its authenticity, quality, and strong connection with island tradition, local community, and sustainable development.
This year, Škraping takes place again on March 7, marking a milestone 20th anniversary edition. Twenty years of continuous growth, international renown, and tight community ties underscore its significance for Pašman and Croatian island promotion overall. Below is an interview with organizer Jelena Ugrinić, revealing the story behind Škraping's origins, development, anniversary, and future vision.
On the history and significance of the race
How was the idea for the Škraping race on Pašman born, and could you have imagined 20 years ago that it would reach such an anniversary?
The idea was born to promote active tourism in the pre-season and encourage islanders to participate in sports. Local organizers devised it to make use of Tkon's natural and human resources. Though it started modestly in 2006, a vision for a unique and authentic race existed even then, though predicting such an anniversary and international success back then was difficult.
What makes this race distinctive today compared to other races in Croatia and abroad?
Škraping is recognized today for its demanding and rare terrain of island sharp rocks, setting it apart from most races in Croatia and abroad. What makes it special is combining extreme sports challenges with the natural and tourist attractions of Pašman island, attracting competitors from many countries and establishing a strong international character.
Which moments or race editions stand out most in your memory over these 20 years?
That is a tough question because every edition brought something special. Every organizer has favorite memories. It's important to note that organizers changed over the years, but all came from the local community, which is deeply meaningful. The race has been under the tourist board's umbrella for 5 years straight. Personally, I would highlight every race start - that moment carries an electric energy hard to put into words.
On the milestone 20th edition
How will the 20th anniversary race differ from previous ones?
The milestone 20th Škraping race will stand out primarily through a strong humanitarian component. In addition, we are returning to the „roots“ of the race, placing special focus on traditional movement across the rugged Pašman terrain to further emphasize Škraping's original spirit.
Are you planning any special surprises or activities for runners and visitors for the anniversary?
We plan to surprise our competitors, but let's keep that a sweet secret for now.
What does this anniversary mean to you personally as an organizer?
Twenty years of Škraping means twenty years of passion, dedication, and love for Pašman, its nature, and its people. Every race holds fond memories and encounters. This milestone is an opportunity to reflect on everything achieved and celebrate unity, athletic energy, and Škraping's unique spirit.
On the humanitarian character
Why did you decide to give the race a humanitarian character for the first time this year?
We wanted the 20th anniversary edition to be more than just a race - to allow participants to do good together through sports and unity, feeling the strength of collective impact.
Who is the humanitarian aid intended for, and how will collected funds be used?
Ten percent of every registration fee will be donated to the maternity ward of Zadar General Hospital to purchase a central CTG device. We want to make a concrete contribution to community health and well-being. We will also enable direct donations from non-runners who wish to help.
How can participants and visitors practically join the humanitarian cause?
By participating in the race, paying the entry fee, or making a direct donation, everyone can be part of this humanitarian effort and contribute toward the shared goal.
On the international character of the race
Which countries do competitors mostly come from, and is interest from foreign runners growing year by year?
Competitors mainly come from Croatia, Slovenia, Germany, Italy, and Austria, and international runner interest grows continuously every year. To date, participants have come from over 15 countries.
11. What do foreign competitors highlight most as the special appeal of the Pašman race?
They most frequently highlight the unique combination of highly challenging movement over sharp Pašman rocks and the island's untouched natural beauty, as such terrain and atmosphere are rarely found in other races.
How much do such events contribute to promoting the island of Pašman outside Croatia?
Events like this significantly boost the promotion of Pašman and the entire Zadar County, drawing participants and media coverage from many countries while showcasing the region's natural beauty and tourism potential.
On organization and challenges
What are the biggest organizational challenges when preparing a race like this, especially on an island?
The biggest challenge is definitely the weather forecast. The race date always carries some weather risk, and over the years, we've encountered almost all possible weather conditions and storms.
How crucial is support from the local community, volunteers, and institutions?
Support from the local community, volunteers, and institutions is vital; the race simply couldn't happen without them. They are the heart of Škraping. I'd especially highlight our many young volunteers, youth aged 12 to 18, without whom organization wouldn't be as smooth and effective.
How do you balance trail difficulty with competitor safety?
Competitor safety is handled by organizers, volunteers, and specialized services like the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (HGSS) and Tkon Volunteer Fire Department (DVD), who monitor the course, respond to injuries, and ensure smooth race operations.
On the future
Where do you see the future of the Škraping race on Pašman over the next 10 to 20 years?
Škraping has long been more than just a race. For over 20 years, we've proven its quality and uniqueness, with strong local community involvement contributing to its vibrant atmosphere. In the future, I see it as a „special edition“ event - a race people will always happily return to for its unforgettable experience and positive energy.
Is there a possibility for the humanitarian character to become a permanent feature?
Over these 20 years, Škraping has held a humanitarian character several times, and our goal for the future is to continue with such initiatives combining sports and community.
What message would you give to those still hesitating to join or come support the race?
If you're hesitating, treat yourself and your family to a weekend full of fresh air, sport, and nature. Running along Pašman's trails, breathing the sea air, and admiring untouched nature offer energy, peace, and a feeling of freedom remembered long after the race.
