Festival of the Chakavian Word

Label holder: Turistička zajednica grada Supetra
Island: Brač
Product group: Intangible Cultural Heritage

The Festival of the Chakavian Word - Stjepan Štefe Pulišlić is a valuable intangible island product with a key role in preserving, nurturing and promoting the Chakavian dialect as one of the fundamental features of the cultural identity of Croatia's islands and coast. The festival brings together poets, writers, students, teachers, musicians and all lovers of the Chakavian word from the island of Brač. Through poetry, music, theatre and workshops, it brings this language to life, a language that carries the soul of the island. The festival is held in Škrip, the oldest settlement on Brač and the birthplace of local poet Stjepan Štefe Pulišlić, after whom it is named, emphasising its deep roots in island tradition. Through literary evenings, recitations, musical performances and gatherings of Chakavian enthusiasts, the festival creates a space in which language is viewed not merely as a means of communication but as living heritage and a bearer of memory, emotion and identity. Chakavian is passed from voice to voice and from verse into song, connecting older and younger generations and encouraging the continuity of cultural memory. As an intangible island product, the festival fully embodies the values of the Croatian Island Product label: authenticity, preservation of cultural heritage, community and the transmission of knowledge and tradition to future generations.
