'Uvati Vitar' Cycling Marathon
Label holder: Turistička zajednica Općine Sutivan
Island: Brač
Product group: Intangible Cultural Heritage
The 'Uvati vitar' cycling marathon is traditionally held on the third weekend of May in Sutivan and attracts an increasing number of recreational and competitive cycling enthusiasts every year. The start and finish are in Sutivan, while the route runs through some of the most attractive parts of Brač. Participants ride along the coast, through fragrant pine forests and up to viewpoints overlooking nearby islands, the Blaca Hermitage and charming Brač villages. The course is adjusted every year to offer competitors a new experience and an additional challenge. The marathon plays an important role in promoting Sutivan, Brač and the entire Split-Dalmatia County, particularly during the pre-season period. It encourages active time in nature and offers a unique combination of sport, socialising and discovery of local heritage. Each year the programme also includes a wide range of accompanying activities: a communal dinner, entertainment, a fair featuring local producers and an expo zone for cycling equipment. At the traditional dinner, visitors can taste authentic specialities such as Brač cheese, lamb, tuna and sweet hroštule pastries. Today, 'Uvati vitar' is a recognised event that enriches the island's tourism and sports offer, connects participants with the local community and creates new value for the entire destination.
